“A mother’s joy begins when new life is stirring inside… when a tiny heartbeat is heard for the very first time, and a playful kick reminds her that she is never alone.”

Last week I attended the Mama Mio Launch which took place at the Life & Day Spa (Crystal Towers Hotel). I’ve never seen so many pregnant women in one room and they definitely catered for all of us, from tasty snacks, njummy deserts to gift hampers. It was a long discussion on how to take care of your body while being pregnant and especially after the baby. I’m a firm believer that there’s no quick fix when it comes to a great body, it takes time and hard work. A well-balanced diet and a variety of exercises is the key to achieve your goal. But then there’s the cellulite, untoned skin, stretch marks ect. This is when I believe in combining exercise and diet with good beauty products. I’ve been using Mama Mio even before I fell pregnant as I see quick results and this is the only product I use now to prevent stretch marks. For those of you who follow my blog you would know that I’ve blogged about Mama Mio before. Go and have a look at the links below where I also explain the products, my personal experience and how to apply each of them.

Today I went for a prenatal yoga class and I walked out more irritated and frustrated than what I’ve hoped for. I use to be so good at yoga, light as a feather. Now I can’t even do a normal downward facing dog without making frustrated noises as I feel much heavier, the 30-40% extra blood and water is probably to blame. I drove straight to the Medi-Clinic Hospital to attend the antenatal aqua aerobics class. I prefer these classes because it’s much more of a workout while feeling weight-less. I did an interview for #HelloDoctor on pregnancy exercise, follow this link to view the variety of exercises they recommend Sometimes I’m so confused with my emotions that I over analyze, don’t think we always know the transformation our bodies go through during this time. At the launch we discussed exactly that and I took some notes to share with all of you.

  • Spider/Varicose Veins – This happens because your body is compensating for the extra blood that is flowing through your body.
  • Spots & Acne – Blame it on the hormones. Cleanse regularly with a gentle cleanser and use an oil-free moisturiser
  • Chloasma (pigmentation changes on your face & neck) – Also known as the “mask of pregnancy”, chloasma has the appearance of brown patches of pigmentation on the forehead, cheeks, and neck. On darker-skinned women, they appear as lighter patches. It’s caused by the increased production of melanin, the tanning hormone, which protects the skin against ultraviolet light. Exposure to sunlight will darken the patches, making them more obvious, so protect your skin with a high factor sunscreen (SPF15 or more)
  • Stretch Marks –  They affect between 75 and 90 per cent of pregnant women and may appear as you put on more weight during pregnancy, causing the skin to stretch.
  • Glowing Skin – The “glow” of pregnancy is not just a saying. Your skin retains more moisture during pregnancy, which plumps it up, smoothing out any fine lines and wrinkles that you may have. The pinkish glow that makes you look radiant is due to increased levels of blood circulating round your body.
  • Your heart grows – Your ribcage stretches out & as your uterus grows, everything else in your body shifts about. Organs such as the heart and the liver enlarge too, due to extra workload, help your body and make sure your posture is correct.
  • Your bones softens – Bend your knees when picking anything up and avoid twisting
  • Your body can swell anywhere – Put your feet up higher than your hips for 15minutes at the end of the day ; Increase your fluid intake to keep kidneys functioning well  (2.5-3L water, yup it’s a lot but this is the amount while pregnant). During the hot summer days I even put my feet in a bucket of ice water, I couldn’t stand the swelling and the throbbing pain.
  • Your hair is thicker – Don’t worry if your hair falls out after the birth, it’s only the hair you would have lost the previous 9 months.
  • You’re more stretchy –  Go gently . To prepare your body for childbirth the hormone Relaxin reduces cartilage and ligament density so you can stretch parts of your body a lot more than normal.
  • Breast change – The obvious…I found lovely bra’s at Women’s Secret but just make sure you get a big enough cup size, their sizes are quite small.
  • You breathe deeper – As your uterus grows your diaphragm is compressed, it seems difficult to breathe but you’re actually breathe in more air, don’t fight the tendency to hollow your back. This counteracts the increased at the front and opens up your ribcage to let more air in.
  • Your baby gets food before you – If you suffer from Iron deficiency, drink a glass of orange juice when you eating foods rich in iron.
