Life Day Spa Cape Town offers an ancient massage technique called Lomi Lomi, read Emmy Schofield’s experience.
The words ‘lomi lomi’ is Hawaiian for massage. Although Lomi Lomi is considered a Hawaiian technique, it was actually brought to the islands by the ancient Polynesians. It was seen as a vital spiritual part of everyday life, and was enjoyed by all members of society from children to chiefs.
I recently experienced an incredible pampering experience: the ancient massage technique of Lomi Lomi at Life Day Spa at Crystal Towers Hotel in Cape Town.
The pool area has a beautiful view of Table Mountain, and the spa itself is a calming sanctuary.
Lomi Lomi is a technique that was brought to Hawaii by the ancient Polynesians, and was seen as a vital spiritual ritual for all members of Hawaiian society. They believed that Lomi Lomi would calm and soothe the body and mind, to create a space to rejuvenate the soul.
The Lomi Lomi massage room was darkened except for a fantastic digital fish tank. My therapist started my treatment by explaining what to expect from the massage, made sure I was warm enough, and asked if I had any existing injuries, or conditions she should be aware of. Once I was comfortable, the therapist started by ‘walking’ down my body with her hands to ground me. Lomi Lomi massage is perfomed using frangipani oil at Life Day Spa. This, the therapist told me is because of it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties – great for my tighter than tight back!
Lomi Lomi is different from other massages I’ve have in that the therapist used not only her hands, but also
her forearms and elbows to perform the treatment.
This is done to allow her to create long, continuous movements down the back and legs. These long movements are done to increase blood flow, which, in turn boosts lymphatic drainage. This is important
because it’s the lymphatic system that transports toxins out of your body. I found these long movements incredibly relaxing! It reminded me of being in the swaying waves at the beach.
During the Lomi Lomi, my legs and arms were gently stretched to release any tight muscles, and my hands
were massaged to relive any tightness in them too.
Once the hour-long treatment was finished, my therapist brought me a glass of cold water, and left me to
take my time ‘waking-up’.
I was so impressed with the results! My back felt like it had been replaced with a new one. And although,
my therapist did do some serious work on a knot in my right should, I wasn’t sore or tender afterwards.
I also had a considerably more energy for the next few days!
I think Lomi Lomi will become a monthly addition to my health and beauty routine.
